Before I show you my portfolio of the top Internet tools that almost certainly help you to work remotely, I need to discuss one more item concerning self management and specifically to do with maintaining your focus and levels of concentration

But for those of us have the chance to work remotely then I thought it would be useful to share my experiences and offer some practical wisdom by putting it on the Internet in the hope that I could give others useful timesavers for adapting to remote working or supervising remote workers.

I must tell you you that there are many self proclaimed ‘gurus’ on the net who will try and persuade you to purchase guides for substantial sums of cash, believe me you don’t have to do this.

I am lucky enough to be able to work wherever I choose and just about everyone who asks me what I do for a living wants to learn how I manage to work remotely. Don’t get the wrong idea I am still improving the science of remote working as everyday I find people on the net who tell me about new approaches and I am constantly coming across new technologies and methods that make my life simpler and improve my productivity.

Over the past 7 years I have substantially adapted my working processes to let me to do the whole of my work remotely with a kit of online tools and rigid self discipline. Workplace Communication

If you wish to achieve good results at work, effective communication is a good place to start. You may be inadvertently undermining yourself in your use of language. There are three dirty little words in the English language which should be used with great care! They are ‘don’t', ‘try’ and ‘but’.

Is that funny crack a way to make people laugh?

Then notice that you may need lots of attention at the expense of others.

Is making the wittiest comment a way to earn points?

Notice that gaining the upper hand means making someone else feels put down.

‘Try’ is a treacherous little word. If someone says that they will ‘try’ to do something, they probably won’t actually achieve it as they are giving themselves a get-out right from the start. So watch out for your language when you say ‘I would like you to try to reach this deadline’. As Yoda said in Star Wars “Do, or do not. There is no try.”.

Don’t Carry Around Comments Like Luggage:  It’s easy to hold on to feedback long after it can be useful.  Listen to the information, consider how you can improve or continue a good practice, and then, move on.

They will probably delete the praise and concentrate on the message that they messed up. Although your intention is to help, you have inadvertently had an impact which will prevent them from performing confidently.

And if you’re the victim of sarcasm, here are a few tips to end it. First of all, when someone levels a sarcastic comment at you, don’t ignore it or pretend it didn’t happen. Look at them and pause. Then repeat what they said word for word. It might sound like this, “Bob, I thought I just heard you say that even an idiot could have written that report.” And then wait. Bob will probably protest that he was joking or that you don’t have a sense of humor. That’s the usual way habitually sarcastic people defend their use of sarcasm. Don’t react. Instead say, “If you have a concern about the report, I’m happy to talk with you about it.” Respond to every one of Bob’s sarcastic comments by repeating exactly what he said and leaving the comment hanging in the air for him to explain.
